West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust selects Zivver to empower staff and patients to share sensitive information securely and prevent data leaks
During Cyber Security Awareness Month, our cyber security experts answered the most frequently searched questions on securing digital communications, working safely from home and eliminating the biggest cyber risks. In video and written format.
Today: how to make your employees care about cyber security?
Nadine Hoogerwerf (Information Security Officer Zivver) explains:
So we all know that employees of any organisation are an essential part of any successful cyber security program, but how do you reach them?
Raising awareness of cyber security risks in 4 steps
1. First, it's important that the cyber security awareness material is relevant to your audience group. Make sure you discuss specific cyber security risks that these people could encounter in their everyday work.
2. It's crucial that the cyber security awareness material is actionable. Discuss specific examples about what could go wrong or already has gone wrong and how to act. The how to act part should be specific enough so people know what to do and how to do it.
3. It's important to embed awareness in your organisation. One event will only raise awareness temporarily, but it will not last, therefore you need to have repetitive awareness activities or even better integrated everyday tasks.
An example from the Zivver Safe Communications Platform is the Zivver Business Rule integration. Users are confronted on a daily basis with tools and tips to share information securely.
For example: "Are you sure you want to send this information in an unsafe way?" comes into the picture when Zivver's Error Prevention Technology detects that personal data or other privacy-sensitive data is being shared. This makes employees increasingly aware of the risks.
4. Finally it's very important to create a sense of ownership, develop this culture in which everyone feels responsible for cyber security, and that there's an open environment to discuss any security concerns.
Also it's vital that not only the security team, but also the management team leads by example.
